May Ortega

Ortega, a Texas native, has been an NAHJ member since her college days. When she moved to New Mexico to begin her professional career as a journalist (chubby cat and fiancé in tow) she realized there was no NAHJ chapter in New Mexico. The opportunities that the organization gave Ortega when she was a budding reporter inspired her to begin the effort to re-establish the Land of Enchantment’s own chapter, which had been dissolved years earlier.

Ortega now works as a public health reporter with KUNM, where she works to give a voice to New Mexico’s most vulnerable populations. At the same time, she hopes to give New Mexico journalists the tools and information they need to do their best work – for themselves and their communities.
